Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival to replace ‘Ant-Man’ at Discoveryland Theatre

'Ant-Man' sneak peek at Discoveryland Theatre, Disneyland Paris

Looks like you’re going to have to finally buy the “Ant-Man” Blu-ray (available for almost five months). It’s reported that the “preview” of the Marvel Studios movie playing in Discoveryland on and off since June last year will finally be replaced soon, with the Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival, an import from Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, taking its place.

Though hardly much more exciting than a movie preview, the Short Film Festival does at least provide guests with three complete pieces of Disney entertainment: “Get a Horse!“, “For The Birds” and “La Luna“. With the location’s 3D projection and in-theatre effects utilised again, it will offer a unique viewing experience for animated short aficionados.

Twitter source Disneylandberry reports that the “Ant-Man” preview will close from 9th May 2016, with Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival opening on 2nd July, the same day as Mickey and the Magician over in Walt Disney Studios Park.

The Walt Disney Animation Studios-produced “Get a Horse!” is likely the star of the bill and the most worthwhile experiencing here; its entire premise and fourth-wall-breaking scenes being perfect for a big screen, 3D effects experience.

Pixar’s two shorts meanwhile feel an almost random choice, though you could say “La Luna” with its storyline of sweeping stars from the moon fits by chance with the theme of the land. As a whole, it almost goes without saying that there’s little reason for the attraction to really take place here, sandwiched between the closed Star Tours and usually shuttered Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet.

The only alternative for Disneyland Paris to fill the theatre was perhaps Star Wars: Path of the Jedi, which plays in Tomorrowland at Disneyland and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This could have given the resort at least a small extra Star Wars feature while the attraction itself it closed, though as it’s really little more than a montage of classic Star Wars moments culminating with the trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“, they probably made the right decision.

Having opened with the park as Cinémagique on 12th April 1992, showing Michael Jackson musical sci-fi Captain EO, the location then hosted Honey, I Shrunk The Audience from 1999 to 2010 before reprising Captain EO on and off between 2010 and 12th April 2015.

With the reimagined Star Tours: The Adventures Continue due to open next door in 2017, Disneyland Paris would be wise to make sure this space is used for something more valuable than temporary 3D films before the current trilogy ends…

Well, this is definitely a better replacement than an advert for an average film, or the dated Captain EO (sorry Michael Jackson fans). I was really hoping for a return to Honey I shrunk the Audience (as I never got to see it first time round) or conversion to something more themed – like Muppet Vision 3d for example. Here’s hoping that when Star Tours 2 opens, its made in to something cool Star Wars themed :)
